Toddler Activities

We all know Toddlers can run circles around trained athletes, so what's keeping us from being sidelined by exhaustion?

Creative and unique toddler actvities!

A little creativity. Necessity is the mother of invention.

Depending on the age of your child, more or less sophisticated activities and materials will apply. A 12-month-old is perfectly happy with a couple of paper plates while a 36-month-old will need glitter, glue sticks and/or an array of sparkly things to accompany those plates.

Temperament plays an important role in understanding your child's behavior and choosing appropriate activities.

Some kids need to jump and move and be very physical. And while this difference may appear across gender lines it is not specific to boys or girls. It is important to notice your child's unique personality and likes and dislikes, when choosing toddler games and activities. Some kids can work independently, others need a buddy.

If you learn to recognize your child's personal needs of expression, you'll find they learn more, faster and are happier for it.

As a rule, all kids need to move! So let them outside. Confining kids to indoor activities will limit their brain power and their muscle power. Exercise is key to healthy brain function and development.

  • FLOUR POWER
  • Try adding some flour in a bowl, a wooden spoon, a few cups and any mesh collander to your child's play table /area and let your child sort, sift and pour for hours. Flour provides a velvety soft texture that toddlers love to manipulate. Throw in some plastic measuring cups and spoons and provide an introduction to math for your older toddlers

If you have a sand or water table you can replace or change out the sand for flour or another medium (it's a good idea to do this anyway to avoid bacteria growth). If you don't have a play table. You can sit your little on in a high chair or right on the floor to enjoy this time. The mess is worth the smile on their faces. To vary this activity, replace flour with sand, beans, rice, shells.

  • PAPER PLATE WAVE
  • A couple of paper plates and some disco music and you're set. Wave those plates around to the music, encouraging your child to create his or her own dance. Moving in rhythm to music contributes greatly to increasing the brain center activity of developing toddlers.
